Coyotes Run Strong at Desert Solstice Invitational
Saturday, Sept 9th
The CV Coyotes had their best showing to date at Friday's Desert Solstice Invitational in Tucson, with the varsity boys taking second to division 1 cross country dynasty Highland. Campo junior Rylan Stubbs ran 16:00 on the new single-loop course at Crooked Tree to finish a close runner-up to Hamilton's David Nelson. CV sophomores Kenny Edwards and Zac Whaley finished 2nd and 3rd for the coyotes, with Zac Whaley winning the first varsity boys' race of the evening in commanding fashion in 17:09. Rounding out the top five were senior Zack Prusse (17:16) and sophomore Garrett Anderson (17:19).
On the girls' side, senior Alaina Kautz finished 11th overall in a field that included national-caliber female athletes. Alaina was backed by one of the strongest CV girls teams in recent years, with junior Layne Farrow finishing second for the lady-coyotes, and a string of freshmen girls close behind. Kaitlyn Bowe, Tori Mask, and Ellie Brooks all finished within a minute of one another, and sophomore Olivia Callaghan matched Mask's time of 22:57 exactly despite running in the later varsity race.
The 49-athlete-strong team had noteworthy performances in the earlier races as well. Junior Ben Reidhead finished top-15 in his race, and fellow junior Jason Tolzman ran his personal record time of just over 25:00. Many freshmen new to the sport at the high school level and 5k distance had marked improvements in time, pacing, and tactics. Overall, it was a brilliant showing for the Campo team.
The Campo cross country team will host a home meet on Thursday evening at the CV Stadium during the JV Football game. Visiting teams will include Arcadia, Goldwater, Queen Creek, and Tempe high schools. Next weekend the team will be racing in California at the famed Woodbridge Invitational.
