RUN CAMPO

CV Cross Country Teams Cap Season with Outstanding Performances at State
Many weeks of hard work paid off for the boys and girls on the CV XC teams at the State Championships. The girls' team was aiming for a top-10 state finish this year, and with well-run races from each young lady on the team, they accomplished just that; finishing 9th place. Alaina Kautz put up one heck of a fight, running in second place for the majority of the 3.1 mile course. In the final uphill stretch, she maintained a top-3 finish to claim the bronze medal; improving upon her 8th place finish in 2016. Freshman Kaitlyn Bowe finished second for the coyotes in 21:30, followed by sophomore Olivia Callaghan (21:46), and freshmen Ellie Brooks (22:22) and Brady Riggs (23:00). Sophomore Taytum Coons and freshman Tori Mask finished in 23:23 and 24:41, respectively.

The boys' team sought after another trophy after finishing runner-up in 2016, and in a tight battle, took the runner-up award this year as well. The boys' team was led by school record-holder junior Rylan Stubbs who hammered the final mile to win in 15:53. He is Campo Verde's first cross country state champion. Behind Rylan, senior Zack Prusse finished 25th in 16:54, followed by Zac Whaley (17:05), fellow sophomore Kenny Edwards (17:15), and junior co-captain with Stubbs, Christian Tamura (17:40). In his final season, senior Avree Anderson finished in 17:55, and sophomore Mac Jones was close behind running 18:25 on the 5k course.

The boys' team will compete together one final time at the Nike Cross Regional at Grande Sports Complex in Casa Grande on Saturday, Nov 18th, where they and Alaina Kautz will attempt to earn a place at the national championships in Oregon in December.
